Profile
Dr. Sethuram earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the M.S. Ramaiah Medical College in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, before doing her pediatric residency at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx, NY, and her fellowship in pediatric endocrinology and diabetes at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
Dr. Sethuram most recently was an attending physician in pediatric endocrinology and diabetes at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She also is an associate professor of pediatrics at both Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey since May 2021 and at Saint George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada since July 2020.
“I chose to study pediatric endocrinology because of two things: One was that I love understanding how the hormones in the body work and how they’re connected to each other,” Dr. Sethuram says. “The other reason is that I like working with children long-term, and because most endocrine disorders are chronic, it allows me the ability to bond with my patients and their families.”
She treats children with a broad range of endocrinology-related conditions, including hormone disorders, thyroid hormone problems and hormone deficiencies and she has a special interest in adrenal disorders like Addison’s disease.
Dr. Sethuram says her initial interest in endocrinology likely stemmed from several of her family members having endocrine disorders.
“It is difficult seeing children sometimes suffer and sometimes go through these hardships for their entire life,” she says. “But I think it’s gratifying to see that in some small ways we are able to help them cope with the conditions, deal with the difficult situations and make it easier for them to be cared for, so they’re able to lead successful lives, which is our goal.”
When not working, Dr. Sethuram enjoys spending time with her family, including her young daughter, and reading.
