Enlarged Prostate Treatment in Southern NH: What Men Should Know About Aquablation

By Dr. Craig Hill, Manchester Urology

Starting in their 50s, many men notice changes in their urinary habits. They may wake up several times at night to urinate, have a weaker urine stream, or feel like their bladder never fully empties. While these symptoms are common, they should not be ignored.

An enlarged prostate, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, affects about half of men in this age range and becomes even more common as they get older. The good news is that BPH is a non-cancerous condition, and advanced enlarged prostate treatment options are available in southern New Hampshire.

At Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, I perform Aquablation therapy to help men find relief from enlarged prostate symptoms so they can sleep better, travel more comfortably, and enjoy daily life again. Through my office at Manchester Urology in Nashua, I care for men every day who are looking for advanced treatment options for an enlarged prostate.

What is an enlarged prostate?

The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder. As men age, the prostate often grows larger. When this happens, it can press against the urethra and make it harder to urinate.

Common symptoms of an enlarged prostate include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Sudden urges to urinate
  • Waking up at night to urinate
  • Weak urine stream
  • Trouble starting urination
  • Feeling like the bladder is not empty

Some men have mild symptoms, while others find these problems affect sleep, work, travel, and overall quality of life.

When should you seek enlarged prostate treatment?

The most important thing I tell patients is that they do not have to “just live with it.”

If urinary symptoms are affecting your daily routine or keeping you awake at night, it may be time to seek enlarged prostate treatment. In some cases, untreated BPH can lead to bladder problems, infections, or kidney damage.

I encourage men to schedule an evaluation if they notice:

  • Frequent nighttime urination
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Slow or weak urine stream
  • Urgency to urinate or leakage

What is Aquablation therapy?

Aquablation is an advanced, minimally invasive enlarged prostate treatment that uses robotic technology and high-pressure water to remove excess prostate tissue. Unlike traditional surgery, Aquablation does not require external incisions.

During the procedure, a camera and ultrasound allow me, along with other surgeons, to see the prostate in real time while robotic technology helps precisely target the tissue causing blockage. The treatment is designed to remove prostate tissue while protecting nearby healthy structures.

Aquablation is performed under anesthesia and usually takes less than an hour.

Why choose Aquablation?

Many men have expressed an interest in Aquablation because it combines the long-term relief of surgery with a lower risk of some side effects associated with traditional procedures. Aquablation enlarged prostate treatment at southern nh health

Benefits of Aquablation may include:

  • Better urine flow
  • Less urgency and frequency
  • Improved sleep
  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced risk of incontinence
  • Lower risk of sexual side effects compared to some traditional surgeries

Aquablation can also be effective for men with larger prostates who may not be candidates for other minimally invasive enlarged prostate treatments.

What is recovery from Aquablation like?

Most men stay overnight in the hospital after Aquablation and return home the next day. It is common to experience mild urinary symptoms during recovery, but many patients notice improvement within a few weeks.

Most men can return to normal daily activities within one to two weeks.
