Inside the 24/7 Pediatric Services at Southern NH Medical Center

Pediatric Hospitalists provide expert, specialized care to our youngest patients

At Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, we’re committed to caring for patients from the moment they are born. Having pediatric hospitalists on-site means your child receives expert, compassionate care whenever it's needed, whether it’s the day they’re born, during an emergency years later, and everything in between.

Here, care is personal and consistent, so our families feel supported because they know they’re in the right hands.

What Is a Pediatric Hospitalist?

Pediatric hospitalists are doctors who specialize in caring for children who are staying in the hospital. They help right after birth, during emergencies, and during planned hospital stays. Our pediatric hospitalist team cares for children of all ages, from newborns to high school seniors.

They care for their patients in many areas of the hospital, including:

  • Labor and delivery
  • Newborn nursery
  • Special Care Nursery
  • Emergency department
  • Pediatric floor

"We are here 24/7 to check on patients, review test results, and adjust care plans," says Dr. Jen, a board-certified pediatric hospitalist. "In emergencies, being right at the bedside helps prevent complications.

Part of the Birth Team

When you're having a baby, our pediatric hospitalists are ready to help if the baby needs extra care. They work closely with the OB doctors, neonatologist, and special care nursery nurses.

  • Healthy babies stay in The Birth Place with their parents.
  • If a baby needs additional support, the baby is cared for in the special care nursery or the pediatric unit, and the pediatric hospitalist team continues to care for the baby along with the neonatologist.
  • Families are cared for by staff specifically trained for postpartum care of both parent and infant.

Caring for Newborns: Our Partnership with Mass General Brigham

At Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, our pediatric hospitalists work hard to give the best care to newborns and their families. One of the ways we do this is through our strong partnership with Mass General Brigham (MGB), a top hospital system known for expert care.

Because of this partnership, SNHMC can connect with MGB’s Newborn Transport and Telemedicine Program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Dr. Romal K. Jassar, a neonatologist and Director of TeleNewborn Program at MGH, explains:

"MGB Newborn Transport and Telemedicine program centered at Mass General Hospital provides 24 x 7 coverage and access to an on-call neonatologist for consultation regarding urgent or non-urgent newborn concerns."

At SNHMC, we have a special video telecart that allows our team to talk with an MGB neonatologist at any time. This video connection helps the specialist see the baby and better understand the situation.

This service not only improves care for our babies, but it also means that many newborns can stay at SNHMC instead of being sent to another hospital. If a baby does need more advanced care, we work closely with Boston MedFlight and MGB to make sure the transfer is smooth and fast.

Our partnership with Mass General Brigham helps us give newborns expert care, right here in our community.
