The annual award recognizes organizations and teams that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to improving the quality, safety and reliability of patient care.

The multidisciplinary team at Southern NH Health was recognized for its efforts to improve the quality of bone marrow biopsy specimens, a critical component in diagnosing and treating patients with blood disorders and cancers.

Bringing together experts from Hematology, Oncology, Pathology, Laboratory Services, Interventional Radiology, Nursing, CT Services, Endoscopy and Quality Management, the team identified opportunities to improve specimen adequacy and reduce delays in diagnosis.

Through collaboration and data-driven improvements, the team standardized procedures and equipment, consolidated services into a single location and established ongoing reviews to sustain progress. These efforts improved specimen adequacy by as much as 38%, helping minimize repeat procedures, lower costs, and improve patient experience.

"In my nearly 30 years of medical practice, I don't think I have seen a better example of a quality improvement," said Dr. Salvatore Vella, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Foundation Medical Partners. "This project was not easy to navigate, with different technology, tests, and teams needed, but it was navigated exceptionally well. I am extremely impressed and proud of this team."

Rebecca Cooper-Piela, Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer at Southern NH Health, accepted the award on behalf of the team at the 2026 New Hampshire Hospital Association/Foundation for Healthy Communities Annual Meeting.

The recognition highlights Southern New Hampshire Health's continued commitment to collaboration, innovation, and improving patient outcomes through high-quality care.
