Southern NH Health is First to Install New Type of Radiation Protection
New System Will Reduce Total Body Scatter Radiation by More than 99%
Improving the health and well-being of our community is at the core of our mission at Southern New Hampshire Health, and that includes those who deliver care to our patients.
To better protect providers who are involved in cardiac procedures, Southern New Hampshire Health has become the first in the US to install a new type of radiation shielding track system that significantly reduces total body scatter radiation by more than 99 percent and is proven to provide 20x greater protection than standard lead aprons and shields.
Providers who regularly perform certain types of cardiac procedures face a higher incidence of cancer and eye problems because of the occupational risks associated with radiation.
The technology, designed by RAMPART, creates a safer environment for Southern NH Health medical staff involved in these highly complicated procedures. With this new system in place, our doctors, clinicians, and technologists do not have to wear personal lead protection while working at the surgical table to implant stents in arteries, and they are better protected during lengthy catheter-based procedures such as angioplasties and thrombectomies.
The newly installed RAMPART system allows providers to “Shed the Lead” as RAMPART phrases it, and remain well protected by a system made from completely sustainable and lead-free materials. Equally as important, the Southern NH Health medical teams will now have the added benefit of moving more easily during procedures because they are not wearing 20 pounds of lead.
