Thoracic Surgery

Thoracic surgeons focus on treating disorders of the chest, especially the lungs, esophagus, and trachea.

The board-certified thoracic surgeons at Southern are affiliated with the Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Thoracic Surgery and are experts at providing advanced surgical treatments for conditions such as:
  • Benign and malignant esophageal disease
  • Chest wall deformities
  • Disorders of the trachea
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Lung cancer
  • Thymic disorders
  • Lung nodules
  • Diaphragm paralysis
  • Mediastinal masses
  • Pleural tumors and effusions
Our thoracic surgeons are skilled in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic-assisted and video-assisted thoracic surgery. These techniques allow for smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays, and faster recoveries for patients.

Occasionally, thoracic surgery cases are highly complex or require resources that are not available at Southern. Our surgeons may decide in these situations that the patient would benefit from having their surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. In these circumstances, the patient’s surgeon at Southern will perform the surgery in Boston. Southern’s thoracic surgery team will collaborate with the care team at Mass General to ensure the process is as seamless as possible.

At Southern, you can trust the expertise and experience of your entire care team to provide you the best care possible.
